Forget gorillas in the mist - Port Lympne zoo prefer their gorillas in the yeast.

Keepers at the Lympne zoo say the primates just can’t get enough of the most hated - or loved – spread in the country.

Head of gorillas at Port Lympne Phil Ridges said: “We’ve been feeding Emmie (left) and Mataki Marmite treats for years and they just love it. They wait eagerly by the gate every week because they know it’s Marmite time.”

Emmie, 17, and 21-year-old Mataki have been enjoying weekly Marmite meals for the past five years, alongside their normal leafy green diet.

The sticky spread is fed to the creatures to vary their diet and ensure they have a good intake of vitamin B.

To soften the potent, powerful punch of Marmite the spread is mixed with a concoction of ingredients including oats, chick peas or tasty termite mounds.
