Green arrest 'not proportionate'

Ashford MP Damian Green

The arrest of the Conservative frontbencher and Kent MP Damien Green was "not proportionate", according to a review published today.

His home in Ashford and House of Commons office were searched in relation to Home Office leaks.

Former British Transport Police chief Ian Johnston says the leaked material was not an issue for national security.

A second report, by Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary, says police should only investigate the most serious leaks and leave the rest to internal inquiries.

Mr Green said: "The report is a sensible one but I am very angry the police knew last December they were not going to prosecute me successfully and yet waited until April before the evidence went to the director of public prosecutions, who then agreed that there was no case to answer."
