A moveable barrier being used on a road in Italy

A REVOLUTIONARY plan to use a moveable concrete barrier along the M20 when Operation Stack is triggered has moved a significant step closer.

A top-level report commissioned by the Highways Agency has concluded that using a moveable barrier to put in place a contra-flow system between Junction 11 and 12 on the M20 could ease the long delays endured by thousands of motorists.

But the consultants’ feasibility study warns the system, used in both America and Europe could cost as much as £13million although some of the initial outlay could be offset by spending less on other aspects of Operation Stack.

The solution involves a purpose-built lorry 'unzipping' a continuous flexible barrier made up of one-metre long concrete units.
