Children from Lydd Primary School
were evacuated on Friday ... by steam train.

Lydd was on the frontline during the
Second World War and families were evacuated – along with the
Romney Marsh sheep – to safer pastures.

Youngsters from the school dressed up
for the day and were evacuated on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch
Railway to New Romney, where they enjoyed a tour of the
railway.

Teacher Nicki Mann said: "During the
year the children studied World War Two and had to write and think
about what the experience of the war and evacuation would have been
like.

"Lots of parents came and waved them
off at Dungeness. It wasn’t particularly tearful as they were so
excited to be on the train!"

Saturday and Sunday saw the railway’s
1940s weekend, with period dancing, unexploded bombs, the Home
Guard, many vintage vehicles and even a visit from a real-life war
bride.

The railway’s armoured train was also
on display, and there were frequent trains and expresses running on
the line.

Joan Reichardt emigrated to Canada
with her soldier husband and visited the line to see the 1940s
recreation.
