An Ashford man killed when his car overturned on the M20 while trying to avoid hitting a stationary car has today been named locally as David Fowler.

The 30-year-old was attempting to miss a car that had moments earlier hit the central reservation when his vehicle flipped from the third lane of the London-bound carriageway.

His green Ford Focus ended up in trees beside the road between J9 and J8 on Saturday night.

The air ambulance was called. Stock picture.

The driver, who did not have any passengers, was pronounced dead at the scene at about 9.20pm.

An investigation is now under way into what caused the red car to crash into the central barrier.

Police closed the road while fire crews, paramedics and an air ambulance crew were at the scene.

The road was reopened at 2.20am after an examination of the scene by serious collision investigation unit officers.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "A green Ford Focus was travelling in lane three of the carriageway and took avoiding action when it came across a red Ford Focus, already stationary in lane 3 following an incident minutes earlier in which it had collided with the central barrier.

"The green Focus then overturned and left the carriageway to the near side, colliding with some trees.

"The driver of this vehicle, the single occupant, a 30-year-old man from the Ashford area, was pronounced dead at the scene."

Witnesses to the crash - or to what caused the red Ford Focus to hit the barrier - are asked to phone police on 01622 798538.
