An Ashford man has been charged £80 for a sausage roll - after he stole it from a petrol station shop.

The 18-year-old bit off more than he could chew when he took the jumbo sausage roll, priced £1.69, from the shop in Brookfield Road, South Ashford.

He was promptly caught on CCTV and identified by PC Scott Stretton who issued the fine.

PC Stretton said: "This proved to be a very expensive jumbo sausage roll.

"Joking aside, it should send a strong message out to other would-be shoplifters that we do not tolerate theft and we do use CCTV to help us - and if an offender is identified we will deal with him.

"Theft is theft abnd as this young man has discovered the value of stolen goods is much less than the cost of the punishment."
