A driver has been hit with a fine after being caught driving a van overloaded with packages.

Officers stopped the man in Ashford to check the weight of his trailer.

While the trailer was found to be within restrictions, it was a very different story when officers glanced in the back of the van.

They found the Iveco van piled from bottom to top full with packages, many of which were labelled 'fragile'.

The total weight was a total of 44% over the legal weight limit for the vehicle – a limit which sets out the maximum weight for a vehicle to carry to be safe on the roads.

Government guidance sets out that if a vehicle is 15% or more over the limit then it is a minimum £300 fine.

The driver was also forbidden by police to go any further until the excess weight was removed.
