A foreign lorry driver fined by police for using his mobile phone at the wheel complained to officers the rules were "stupid".

He was caught on the M20 near Ashford and hit with a fine of £200 and six points.

The penalty was recently doubled following a spate of tragedies on the roads involving drivers on their phones.

Kent Road Policing Unit tweeted the dismissive response by the driver to being stopped last night.

They said he had to pay the fine before being allowed to continue his journey.

Foreign drivers also have a 'ghost' licence created in the UK which can be enforced if they accumulate too many points on British roads.

Police on the county's roads have been targeting drivers on their mobiles since the tougher penalties were introduced - often using unmarked vehicles to catch them in the act.

Recently KMTV joined a patrol which caught nine drivers in just 90 minutes.
