Police in Ashford are reminding motorists to take care in the heavy rain following a spate of accidents.
PC Ian Clark, roads policing officer for the south Kent area said: “Between Monday, October 5 to mid-day Wednesday, October 7, 57 road traffic collision were reported in the South Kent policing area.
“Of these, 34 resulted in injury, some serious.
“The recent heavy rain has made the road surfaces very slippery and I urge motorists to bear this in mind when using the roads.”
He added: “Reduce speed and increase the distance from the vehicle in front, because in wet weather braking distances are doubled. Driving in this weather reduces visibility so make sure you can see and be seen.
“Drive with headlights on dipped beam and motorcyclists should consider wearing high-vis tabards.
“It is even more important to check vehicles are well maintained, for instance keep the lights, windows and mirrors clean; make sure your wipers and lights are in good working order and you have adequate screen wash to keep your windows clear.”
PC Clark said: “Ensure your tyres have plenty of tread depth and are maintained at the correct pressure.
“Please take care while out using the roads and allow yourself extra time to travel to your destination ensuring you arrive safely.”
