Uber Eats and Just Eat drivers are striking tonight over poor pay.

Around 35 drivers gathered in Sainsbury's car park in Park Farm Road, Folkestone, earlier today after announcing they would not drive for Just Eat.

Their efforts were bolstered later on in the day after between 40 and 50 drivers gathered in Eureka Entertainment Park in Ashford - stating they were striking over poor pay from both Just Eat and Uber Eats.

Driver Daniel Pearson, 38, from Ashford, explained drivers were having to work longer and longer hours to make enough money.

"This has been going on for four months but it's been getting worse," he said. "Fuel prices have been going up - increasing every week - but delivery prices are actually coming down.

"With Just East you get a price for the job and get told where you're picking up and delivering to - these prices are going down. Uber give you a basic rate - the last couple of weeks it's been a flat rate - £3 for a job that would take you a couple of miles to pick up and a couple of miles to deliver, plus you might be waiting in the restaurant for 10-15 minutes.

"Most of these guys are having to do 12 hours a day. They're not seeing their families, you don't get holiday pay or sick pay - it's destroying us. We can't do it for nothing.

"We just want a basic living so we don't have to work 12 hours a day. We're not going to be millionaires in this job but just give us that bit of respect."

Yesterday Folkestone-based driver Vio, 32, slammed Just Eat for cutting pay.

"It used to be £7.50 for between 2.5 and three miles," he said, "Now it's £6. It's quite a lot less. They didn't tell us they were changing the pay.

"It's not fair - the price of fuel is rising, everything is growing - how can we survive when we're self employed?"

A statement from Just East yesterday said: "We take any concerns raised by our couriers seriously. Our delivery payment model has been designed to give couriers the flexibility to deliver when they choose. We continue to offer a competitive base rate to self-employed couriers and pay is reviewed regularly."

Just Eat and Uber have been approached for further comment on today's strikes.
