Conservative association officials have reiterated their support for MP Damian Green amid speculation the outcome of an investigation could be nearing an end.

The MP has been the subject of a cabinet inquiry into allegations - which he strongly denies - of inappropriate conduct with a female journalist.

That was then widened to examine claims that pornographic material was found on a computer in his office back in 2008, which the MP also denies viewing or downloading.

His position had appeared less secure last week when a former Met Police detective came forward to claim that he too had discovered pornography on his computer.

But that seemed to trigger support from his colleagues - including the Brexit secretary of state David Davis.

The vice chairman of the Ashford Conservative Association Paul Clokie said he continued to accept the MP’s denials.

“I am quite happy to take him at his word. He is not going to say something that proves to be untrue - it would make him look stupid,” he said.

Mr Green has also been supported by his former Parliamentary colleague and party leader Lord Howard of Lympne, who was MP for Folkestone and Hythe, who said: “Policing in this country is based on trust between the police and the public...if we have retired officers leaking information of that kind it will be very damaging to that trust.”

However, cabinet colleagues were split on Mr Green’s future. The Brexit secretary David Davis was reported to have threatened to quit his job if Mrs May forced her de facto deputy to quit.

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt also gave him support but there was a dissenting voice from Education Secretary Justine Greening.

Speaking on the Marr show on BBC, she said: “I think it is important we have high standards in public life.”
