A Remembrance Sunday silence was disrupted by the sound of a police whistle, as a motorist on P plates drove past with a child stood up in the back.

The service was being held at the War Memorial in Ashford when a sergeant spotted the vehicle.

He blew his whistle, stopped the car and discovered the driver was over the drink drive limit.

The suspect was arrested and the Ashford force have apologised for the disturbance to the service.

The children were taken home by another parent.

The force Tweeted to say he was "still pretty chuffed" about getting to use his whistle.

Across Kent people gathered round memorials this morning and descended into a two minute silence at 11am to remember those who lost their lives fighting for their country.
