Retail bosses have announced the closure of another High Street shop.

The Evans store in Ashford town centre has a 70% discount sale, and staff have removed posters and displays from the shop windows.

It is run by the retail company Arcadia, which previously closed its Burton Menswear store in the town in June last year.

The company, owned by Sir Philip Green, previously ran BHS until it was sold to a consortium for £1 in 2015. Ashford’s BHS store closed in July last year.

Now a sign in the Evans shop window states: “We’re sorry to be closing this store. Your biggest Evans store is only a click away.”

Meanwhile last summer businessman Julian Silver took over the former Merchant Chandler space, which is owned by the Arcadia group.

He intends to convert the ground floor into a gourmet burger bar, with work set to start before Christmas, while upstairs he has opened the Vapelation lounge.

Mr Silver also hopes to reveal a planning application for the grade-II listed building and Evans shop frontage in the coming weeks.
