Police were forced to use a stinger device to stop an allegedly stolen lorry in Ashford town centre last night.

Officers from the force's roads policing unit arrested the driver and passenger in the vehicle, which was caught in the early hours.

The lorry was reportedly driven down the High Street at 1am, before being stopped in Singleton Hill after passing through bollards in Beaver Road.

A barrier in Tannery Lane close to the Stour Centre was damaged in the incident.

An Ashford Borough Council spokesman said access to the Stour and Civic Centres is now possible via Tannery Lane but exit remains only through Station Approach.

Police say the occupants were arrested for a number of offences.
