A leisure centre is now open again after temporarily closing due to a power failure.

Gym users and swimmers were unable on visit the Stour Centre, off Tannery Lane, in Ashford this morning after the power inside the building went out. The Civic Centre next door also suffered a black out.

A message from the Ashford Lesiure Trust, which runs the leisure centre, said earlier today: "The Stour Centre is currently closed due to a power failure and the phones are also out of order.

"We have been advised by the National Grid that the power could be out for two hours but will keep you posted!"

Although the Stour Centre has now re-opened, the council offices are still reporting problems.

A spokesman for the council said that they are currently relying on back-up generators.

They said: "Earlier this morning the Civic Centre and Stour Centre suffered a power failure.

"The Stour Centre’s power has been restored but the Civic Centre is still relying on the building’s back-up generator.

"Staff are working with UK Powergen on site to resolve the issue but the back-up generator may continue running through the night.

"This is to ensure the main council systems are still able to function normally.

"We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to residents local to the area."
