Swimmer Nick Boylan continued his countdown to next month’s Global Games with an outstanding performance in the Southern Counties Championships at Aldershot.

Swimming in the multi-disability section, the 24-year-old from south Ashford (pictured) claimed golds in the backstroke over 50m and 100m, in the breaststroke over the same distances, and the 50m freestyle.

He also took a silver in the 100m freestyle, setting a county record.

Boylan, who is a member of the City of Canterbury SC, followed up that performance by taking two more medals in the DSE British International Disability Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.

He finished third in the 100m backstroke and was runner-up in the 100m breaststroke, achieving the qualifying time for October’s International Paralympic Committee (IPC) European Championships in Iceland for the breaststroke.

Boylan leaves for the Global Games in the Czech Republic on July 5 and will compete in six events – the 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke, 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke and 1,500m freestyle.

He had to raise £1,400 to fund the trip and has received around £1,000 in donations – £350 of which came from a quiz night, organised by David Vane, at The Swan Centre. The Ashford Winkle Club and Ashford Rotary Club also made donations. Boylan’s mother, Pat, said: "We have been so touched by the people who have given us donations, friends, family and other people who just read about it in the paper.

"We even had £10 in a brown envelope put through our letterbox."
