Bollywood filmmakers are hoping for a big break in the UK market as their latest blockbuster is set for a series of screenings in Kent.

Toilet: A Love Story, features one of India’s biggest stars Akshay Kumar alongside Bhumi Pednekar, and despite the odd title, it raises a huge issue facing India relating to women’s safety as they try to access safe toilets.

The film is based on the true life story of Keshav and Jaya, whose love transcends social barriers but whose marriage is tested by something as simple as going to the toilet. It is set to be screened at the Cineworld in Ashford.

The problem has been described as an "open defecation crisis" as some women have to walk several miles to be able to access safe facilities, but the situation is being improved thanks to schemes such as the Clean India Movement.

The first screening is on Friday, August 11, and there are set to be 11 more screenings of the film at 8.20pm each night until Thursday, August 17.
