Firefighters rescue injured woman trapped in a car in The Street, Great Chart, near Ashford

An elderly woman had to be cut free from the wreckage of her car after two vehicles collided in a village on the outskirts of Ashford on Thursday evening.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to the collision involving two cars at the junction of The Street and Singleton Road in Great Chart at 8.21pm.

On arrival fire crews found an elderly woman trapped and injured inside her Renault Scenic at the crossroads.

After being assessed at the scene by paramedics the woman was taken to hospital to receive further treatment.

Two fire engines from Ashford were sent to the scene.

Crew manager Tim Hanley said: "It happened on the crossroads in Great Chart and involved two vehicles. One had crashed through a garden fence.

"One person was trapped and she was in the car that went through the garden.

"We used hydraulic equipment to cut her out and she was taken to hospital for further checks."

Crews had to remove the roof of the vehicle, to allow them to release the woman and then made the scene safe before leaving.
