Police are hunting burglars who took five oil paintings worth nearly £1,000 from a house in Dungeness.

At least one of the paintings, which depicts a desert scene with a church, is believed to date back to the Victorian period.

A set of three paintings depicting old Hastings in modern gilt frames was also taken, alongside a painting of a rural church, river and trees in an ornate gilt frame.

The works are believed to have been taken from the home, in Dungeness Road, at some point between August 28 and September 4. A rear window was also damaged to the value of £50.

The thefts occurred in the same week as another work, believed to be by the graffiti artist Banksy, was hacked from a shipping container on Dungeness beach.

Several artists have lived in Dungeness, including the film legend Derek Jarman, who resided at Prospect Cottage until his death of an AIDS-related illness in 1994.
