Two girls have spoken of their terrifying hour-and-a half ordeal stuck in mud up to their chests.

The 12-year-olds remembered a lesson they learned at school, dialled 999 on a mobile phone, and were rescued by firefighters.

Georgia Fofana and Lauren West, both pupils at Ashford's Towers School, took Georgia’s two dogs for a walk through fields opposite Eastwell Towers, Faversham Road, Kennington.

Georgia said: “We thought it was funny but we kept sinking lower – right up to our chests – and then thought this isn’t funny any more.

“It was getting cold, dark, itchy and smelly.”

Lauren said she felt “absolutely terrified”.

The dogs were barking and running around.

Georgia said: “They were really wanting to help us but they couldn’t do anything.”

The phone, which Georgia had put on the river bank, looked as though it was out of reach.

Firefighter Alistair Gilfillan, from Ashford’s green watch, said the girls did exactly the right thing in calling them.
