VICTIM CHRISTOPHER REINKE: "Even when I use cashpoints I am going to start going into the bank now"

A 40-year-old fraud victim lost nearly £1,000 after criminals cloned his bank card.

The first Christopher Reinke knew about it was when his card was refused at a cashpoint.

He had taken no money out that day but the machine said he had reached his withdrawal limit and could not have more cash.

A print-out of Mr Reinke’s balance showed him more than £600 had gone from his account.

A further £300 was taken shortly afterwards before the account was blocked by his bank, Abbey National.

“I wouldn’t have known if it hadn’t been for my kids asking me to get dinner,” said Mr Reinke, of Arcon Road, South Ashford.

“I am probably not the only one and I would like to say to warn people to check their bank details and transactions when they use cards anywhere. Even when I use cashpoints I am going to start going into the bank now.”

Abbey spokesman Tracy North confirmed Mr Reinke’s card was cloned on or around May 18 but said the company did not know where it happened.

“It could have been compromised at any point,” she said. She stressed that the money would be refunded to Mr Reinke within 10 days.

Police spokesman Colin Topley added: “It is a very complicated area of crime and it is only possible to confirm what happened after a long investigation.

“If you become suspicious your card is being used fraudulently call your bank to get it cancelled immediately and report the matter to the police.

“Be vigilant in how you allow your card to be handled. Do not let it be removed from your sight, protect your PIN, and check your statements.”
