Charing fire victim was 100-year-old Violet Kilby

A woman killed in a fire at a residential park was 100 years old, it has emerged.

Violet Kilby, who was known as Kay, became trapped in her burning chalet on the Longbeech Park on Tuesday afternoon.

It is believed she worked as a nurse during the Second World War.

Fire crews were called to the residential site off Canterbury Road in Charing near Ashford just after 2pm.

Firefighters were able extinguish the blaze by 3.40pm, but not in time to save the victim.

Tributes left on the Facebook page of KentOnline's sister title, the Kentish Express described her as "a lovely lady with the greatest character".

Gemma Harris commented: "So sad! She was so lovely. It was a pleasure to have met her."

The park is owned by the Haulfryn Group, which offered its condolences to Mrs Kilby's family.

The park remains open for other residents, while Kent Fire and Rescue Service investigates the cause of the blaze.
