Benn Barham shot 135 over two rounds to qualify

KENT'S Benn Barham has qualified for the Open Championship at Carnoustie after carding a total of 135 at International Final Qualifying in Sunningdale on Monday.

The 31-year-old from Ashford finished five under par after he carded 67, 68 over the Old and New Course.

The 36-hole Open qualifying ended in controversy when eight players were told to replay a hole on the Old Course because of a difficult pin position.

Brett Rumford three-putted from two feet on the 156-yard par-three fourth, while Ricardo Gonzalez took five putts and Edoardo Molinari and Alexander Noren both four-putted.

The qualifier was won with 131 by Graeme McDowell with 67 and 64.

Among Benn's fellow qualifiers were Miguel Jiminez with a 133 total, England's Peter Baker and David Frost of South Africa with 136.

A notable casualty was the popular Ian Woosam who carded 69, 71 for a 140 total.

Barham finished ninth out of 16 players who earned the right to compete at Carnoustie from July 19 to 22.
