Stuart Zanone’s goals are costing Ashford United money – and Don Crosbie is delighted.

Tony Betteridge (L) and Don Crosbie (R) with former Ashford programme editor Elaine Orsbourne.

United’s owner hailed the striker’s seven-goal display at Lingfield on Tuesday night as “fantastic” and confirmed the 40-plus goal marksman benefits every time he scores.

Much is made of United’s reputed budget – mostly by other clubs – and while not talking figures, Mr Crosbie said: “Stuart is not on a lot of money but there is a goal bonus in place.

“Give him the service and he will get you goals.

“We have also had eight approaches for him in as many days, from clubs paying a lot more than we do and he has rejected them all.”

Zanone added: “A few teams have come in for me, some have offered me more money. But I love it at Ashford –the boys, management and the staff.

“It’s the first time I have really enjoyed my football for a long-time. I don’t want to go just for a bit of money.

However, Zanone leaves for a pre-arranged holiday on Sunday, meaning he misses three games, with United looking to add to their squad to cover the absence.

Ashford went second, following the win at Lingfield, closing the gap on Southern Counties East League leaders Phoenix to 10 points, but boss Paul Chambers is looking no further than the home game against Cray Valley PM on Saturday.

He said: “Myself and Lloyd(Blackman) will prepare the team to play Cray and are not looking past that game.
