Long jumper stars at schools championships

THERE were some excellent performances in the Kent Schools championships at the Julie Rose Stadium in Ashford but none more so than the record equalling jump by Daniel Caprice.

The remarkable youngster, appearing for Medway District, has only just taken up the long jump and soared to 6.10m equalling a 34 year old record in the junior boys.

Amazingly, in the stand was the man who set that record in 1970, former Dartford Harrier Michael Toulson, along to cheer on his daughter Katie who won a bronze medal for Dartford/Gravesham in the intermediate girls 200m.

It was a stunning leap by Daniel in the best of the conditions of a variable day.

Less fortunate was Katie among the 200m finalists at the end of the meeting who ran in the wet and there was quite literally a storming performance in the last event where Ashford AC's Will Allingham (Shepway) was just shut out of the gold by .3 a second in a brilliant run for the line by Ashford teammate Duncan Adamson (Thanet) as heavy rain brought the meeting to a close.
