Ashford United name former Millwall striker Gary Alexander as assistant manager

Former Greenwich Borough boss Gary Alexander has joined Ashford United as assistant manager.

The 38-year-old former Millwall striker resigned after two years as Borough boss on Thursday January 4 along with assistant John Mackie.

He will start his new role at Homelands on Monday and replaces Paul Barnes who left earlier in the day to fill Alexander's old role at Greenwich.

United's website said: "Gary brings tremendous experience and football knowledge to AUFC and has a solid player directory.

"So congratulations to Jason Whitmore on securing this terrific signing after the last six weeks of great football management and team restructuring.

United, unbeaten in five Bostik South matches, travel to Walton Casuals on Saturday.

Barnes - who has previously worked at Dover, Welling and Margate - will take charge of Greenwich for the first time on Saturday when they host Herne Bay.

On his appointment he tweeted: "Absolutely delighted to be appointed and can't wait to get to work @GBoroughfc

"I would like to thank everyone connected to @AshfordUnitedFC for giving me the opportunity to work for a brilliant club. it was not an easy decision and I wish you all every success in the future, I hope all the @AUFCFans get behind @jason_whitmore and the players."
