Dr Rowan Williams

The Archbishop of Canterbury has launched a withering two-pronged attack - on both the government and us!

He dubbed the credit crunch a welcome reality check for a society driven by unsustainable greed.

Dr Rowan Williams says the country has been going in the wrong direction for decades by relying on financial speculation to generate wealth quickly, rather than making things.

He also criticised Gordon Brown's plans to spend its way out of recession, likening them to an "addict returning to the drug".

Downing St countered the Archbishop's attack, saying he was entitled to his views.

The Prime Minister's spokesman said Mr Brown was trying to help people in difficult times.

• Is Dr Williams right? Are we a 'society driven by unsustainable greed', or is this just a cyclical recession? Are the government's policies right?Join our debate in the 'Make a comment' section below.
