Archbishop: remove fear tactics from election

DR WILLIAMS: warning political leaders against 'reactionary and fear-driven' politics

THE Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has urged the country's political leaders not to frighten voters over the threat of terrorism.

In a letter sent to all party heads, Dr Williams highlighted four key long-term issues for the imminent General Election centred on what he called 'deep rooted challenges.'

He argued commitment to the environment, international development, youth and family issues and criminal justice reform could revive 'disaffected' voters' interest.

He conceded familiar anxieties over terrorism and immigration had already played a part in the battle for votes but warned leaders against 'reactionary and fear-driven' politics.
