An overwhelming number of you who responded to our online poll on the alternative guide to Canterbury feel it is a fair representation of the city.

Eighty-two per cent of respondents thought the guide, which swops five-star hotel accommodation for subway sleeping and art galleries for street graffiti, summed up Canterbury.

Now student Fon Pimwaree Kittisarakul has been unmasked as the author of the booklet.

Fon, 25, who goes to the University for the Creative Arts in Canterbury, created the guide for her masters degree project in spatial practices.

“My area of study is the city centre and I remember first picking up a city council guide book that talked about all the beautiful attractions,” said Fon, who is originally from Thailand.

“The main part of my course is the study of utopian spaces.

“I wanted to do something that would contrast with the original guide, looking at other aspects of utopia in the city that people don’t talk about as much, like the homeless sleeping rough, buskers playing and animals roaming around the streets.”

Fon’s work is just one exhibit in a postgraduate degree show being held at the university in New Dover Road from Friday.
