A graphic designer-turned-author is creating a new book taking children on a literary adventure around Canterbury.

From the Cathedral to Dane John Gardens, Wingham Wildlife Park, and Toddler's Cove, the book by Alyssa Weaver shows off the city and surrounding area through a child's eyes, with her son, aged 18 months, as the protagonist.

It is called Elliot's Adventure in Canterbury.

Mrs Weaver, who moved to Wincheap from Texas with her husband Taylor before having Elliot, initially made the book for his first birthday.

But the 29-year-old had a lightbulb moment and decided other little ones might want to read it, too.

She is now in the process of raising funds to get it printed and published, before it hits the shelves in book stores, including Canterbury's Waterstones.

Mrs Weaver said: "Elliot was born here and he’s made so many friends so I decided to make a story about him and his friends going on an adventure in Canterbury - from having a picnic beside the River Stour, doing acrobatics in Toddler's Cove playground and climbing to the top of the Dane John mound to spot Canterbury Cathedral."

Mrs Weaver, who also illustrated the book - suitable for toddlers to five-year-olds - says it will help them learn the names of some of the historic landmarks in Canterbury.

“The story also shows how fun it is to use your imagination, as Elliot dreams up fantastic scenarios, such as imagining a dragon soaring over the Cathedral,” she added.

Mrs Weaver says she could see the book working as a series, with Elliot going on adventures in other areas of Kent.

“I’ve already had people saying they’d love to see other Kent places featured,” she said.

She is launching a Kickstarter to help fund its publication.
