A picture by the elusive graffiti artist Banksy goes on sale in Canterbury today with the eye-watering price tag of £234,000.

Called Family Target, the poignant image is one of four originals in an exhibition which opens at the Lilford Gallery in Palace Street.

Also featured is a work called Precision Bombing, which costs £176,000 but was last offered for sale in Canterbury for £35,000 in 2004, when the gallery was located in Castle Street.

Gallery owner David Lilford says it show the huge rise in demand for the artist’s work, which now regularly sells for hundreds of thousands of pounds at auction.

“Many art dealers believe it is only a matter of time before a Banksy breaks the million-pound barrier at auction,” he said. “Obviously, it is only something a serious investor would buy but the evidence is that prices are rising.

The exhibition - which runs until October 13 - also includes signed prints by the artist, as well as printed record sleeves and other paraphernalia with prices starting at £500.

The nearest example of the street artist’s work is in Dover where he created a Brexit-inspired mural.
