Patients and staff were evacuated from Kent and Canterbury Hospital after fears were raised about a suspicious bag.
The hospital's health and safety manager ordered the mass clear-out of the outpatients building when the bag - which was inside a two-wheeled shopping trolley - was left unattended.
People filed out into the car park shortly after 2.10pm.
A hospital spokesman says the bag was thought to have been suspicious but was ruled safe by hospital staff.
Everyone was back inside the building by 2.30pm.
