A terrified woman has been forced to hand over cash by a burglar who broke into her home in the city centre.

The intruder got into the property in Best Lane shortly after 1pm yesterday (Sunday).

But when he came face to face with the woman, who is in her 50s, he threatened her and she gave him money.

Police are treating the incident as an aggravated burglary.

Detective Constable Rob Goodban said: "We believe the intruder probably thought the house was empty, but when he realised someone was home he forced the occupant to hand over cash. He left a few minutes later."

"The occupant was understandably shaken by the incident and we are keen to trace the offender."

Police have now issued a description of a man they would like to speak to.

He is described as white, in his 30s or early 40s, 5ft 8in to 5ft 10in tall and of a thin build.

He had blonde/sandy-coloured hair and a beard, and was wearing a black knitted beanie hat and baggy jeans. He spoke with a local accent.

Anyone who recognises the description or has information about the incident should call police on 01843 222289, quoting reference 46/12926/19.
