Firefighters were called to tackle a blaze at halls of residence at Kent University.

The alarm was raised at 3pm on Saturday afternoon and two engines were sent to Wolf College in Giles Lane to fight the fire in a communal kitchen.

Students had left a pan of oil unattended, it over headed and caught light. It was then lifted onto the floor and the residents made their escape.

It took 45 minutes to put out and no-one was injured. There was however fire damage to the kitchen and smoke damage to the hallway.

Fireman Jo Symons said: “We would always remind people not leave their cooking unattended or get distracted.

“It is very dangerous and could have serious consequences. Luckily in this case no-one was hurt.

“People should also know where their fire equipment is such as a fire blanket or a fire extinguisher.”

Fire crews were also called to a blaze alongside the A2, just before Brenley Corner late on Saturday afternoon.

Using their local knowledge two engines from Faversham and two from Canterbury tracked the fire down to a stable block in Horses Road in Boughton.

Firefighters took two hours to fight the flames and were stood down at 7.40pm.

Luckily there were no horses in the six stables as their owner had taken them to a show jumping competition for the weekend.
