Mel Clewlow admits the Canterbury Ladies squad are "getting excited" after their National Premier Division title destiny returned to their hands but claims they won’t lose focus in their last three games.

Canterbury enjoyed a perfect weekend with a 4-0 win at Clifton on Saturday afternoon while second-placed Leicester suffered a 1-0 defeat to Reading the following day.

With three league games remaining, Canterbury are four points ahead of Reading, while defending champions Leicester are now third on goal difference, although they do have a game in hand on the top-two.

Fifth-placed Bowdon Hightown are seven points behind Canterbury, meaning the city club can seal a top-four place and a play-off spot with victory at the University of Birmingham on Saturday lunchtime.

Defender Clewlow (pictured) said: "The girls are probably getting excited now because our destiny is back in our hands, but it’s not over and done with yet.

"We have three tough games coming up but at least now we know if we win them we will be top of the league.

"We have never been in this situation before so we are not nervous, we’ll just need to keep doing what we’re doing and focus on one game at a time."

At Clifton the points were secured thanks to a fast start and Clewlow said: "We were brilliant in the first 15 minutes and they struggled to live with us.

"It was a good, professional performance and we answered a few questions after losing to Reading the previous week.

"It was an unbelievable weekend for the whole club, after the doom and gloom of the previous week."
