Some of the biggest names in television have sent messages of support to a Canterbury schoolgirl who is preparing to cut her hair for charity.

Eight-year-old Demi Sampson is donating her long locks to the Little Princess Trust so they can be made into a wig for sick children.

But the decision hasn't been a snap one for the Canterbury Primary pupil, as she committed to the challenge more than two years ago and has been growing her tresses ever since.

Kym Marsh, who plays Michelle Connor, said in hers: "I wanted to say what a wonderful little girl I think you are. Good luck sweetie."

Jack P. Shepherd, who stars as David Platt, added: "Everyone is incredibly proud of you and I hope you raise lots of money."

The messages were orchestrated by fellow Corrie actor Jimmi Harkishin, who plays Dev Alahan in the soap and has a home opposite the Sampson family in Canterbury.

Demi's dad, Adam Sampson, 37, said: "Demi's over the moon. She's so excited by what they've done for her."

Demi's chosen charity provides real hairpieces free of charge to young people who have lost their own due to cancer, something the soap stars have described as "fantastic".

Mr Sampson added how proud they are of their daughter: "She's never been able to put her finger on the driving force behind wanting to do it.
