Disabled Canterbury pensioner Tony Hickson has been reunited with his beloved Great Dane after it went missing for four days.

Daisy, a black and white bitch, is a regular sight in the city walking alongside Mr Hickson, who uses a mobility scooter to get around.

But last Friday, the Great Dane was following Mr Hickson in Palace Street when she disappeared.

A frantic search proved fruitless but witnesses reported seeing Daisy with a woman.

Mr Hickson was distraught and appealed for help in finding his best friend and yesterday he was reunited with her after Daisy was traced by Canterbury's neighbourhood police team to a house in Sittingbourne.

An emotional Mr Hickson said: “I was so fearful I would never see her again. I am just so grateful to the police for the work they put in to finding her.”

When Daisy went missing, the police were informed and community support officers Kay Sims and Fay Curtis studied CCTV footage from city cameras.

The dog was spotted and further inquiries resulted in yesterday’s happy reunion.

Kay said: “It is so good to see her back in her home where she is obviously very much loved.”

Two people have been arrested in Sittingbourne in connection with Daisy's disappearance.

Stephen Piggott, 61, of Greenways in Sittingbourne, has been charged with the theft of a dog and is on police bail until appearing in front of magistrates on November 5.

A 16-year-old girl from Sittingbourne has been bailed pending further inquiries until November 10.
