Budget chain Poundstretcher is due to close one of its stores in Canterbury.

It is believed the retailer is planning to leave its base in Wincheap, next to the Dunelm superstore, by the end of the month.

The firm has operated at the unit off the A28 for the past four years, but has decided now is the time to leave.

The 44,000 sq ft site is up on the market online, with a rental cost of £140,000 per year.

Its impending closure will be another addition to the list of superstores to shut in the past 16 months in Wincheap.

Over the other side of the road, the Riverside Retail Park is half empty following the departure of three chains.

Argos, Mothercare and Carphone Warehouse have all recently bowed out of the complex - leaving just Morrisons and Boots as the two remaining retailers.

In positive news, however, the long-vacant former Homebase a couple of hundred metres down the road was filled last month.

MKM Building Supplies moved into the council-owned unit and started trading.

As for Canterbury's other Poundstretcher, which is located off Sturry Road, the store is set to remain in operation.

The firm, which prides itself on being the UK’s leading discount retailer, has been approached for comment, but has not responded.

A significant number of Poundstretcher branches have closed in the past year across the UK, with its portfolio shrinking by about 80.

An exact closing date for the Wincheap store is not known.
