A new Disney store has opened in the county - but hurry, as it may only be here until Christmas.

The shop in the Whitefriars shopping centre in Canterbury had a low-key launch at 9am this morning.

There were no queues and more staff than customers at the launch - despite a wave of anticipation on social media.

Although there is no official closing date for the store, the site has only been leased until Christmas, with Disney due to make a decision about its future based on its performance.

The site is expected to create 16 jobs.

After hearing the news of its opening, Caroline Ratcliffe wrote on Facebook: "I'm going to be MIA for a few days."

Hannah Plumber added: "It's finally here."

Star Wars action figures, Mickey Mouse cuddly toys and Frozen dresses will be among the items lining shelves as Disney workers try to fulfill a "unique retail experience" for customers in the lead-up to Christmas.

Located opposite Sports Direct in the former Build-A-Bear Workshop unit, the shop will create 16 jobs.

Staff, known as cast members, will provide entertainment for visitors and a "wide range of exclusive Disney merchandise" including the new Incredibles 2 range will be on offer.

Graham Burridge, managing director of Disney Store Europe, said: “We’re delighted to open a pop-up Disney Store at Whitefriars.

"The store features a fantastic range of Disney, Marvel and Star Wars merchandise and is the perfect place to find the toys, gifts, collectibles and everyday treats for all the family.

"Our staff are looking forward to welcoming the people of Canterbury over the coming weeks and months.”

This summer marks the highest unit occupancy rate in Whitefriars since the complex opened more than a decade ago.
