Kent Air Ambulance lands at the scene of Wednesday's accident near St Stephen's Junior School

An elderly woman has been flown by air ambulance to a London hospital with life-threatening injuries following a collision near St Stephen’s School, Canterbury this afternoon.

It happened in Hales Drive shortly after 2pm when the driver of a silver Nissan Note collided with a cyclist and then hit a tree, causing the vehicle to overturn.

The woman cyclist, who is a parent at the school, was uninjured, as were the driver and a passenger in the car.

But another passenger - a woman in her 70s - suffered serious injuries and the Kent Air Ambulance landed on the nearby recreation ground to take her to hospital.

Officers from Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit were called to the scene which was sealed off to traffic.

They are appealing for witnesses who should call 01622 798538 with any information.

St Stephen’s Junior School headteacher Stuart Pywell said: “The emergency services dealt with it very effectively and we were able to give our parents early warning so children could be collected from a separate entrance.”
