A Kent University lecturer remains in custody in a Brazilian prison 10 days after his arrest.

English language tutor Martin Boyle was detained by authorities on arrival in Sao Paulo for allegedly owing £4,000 in unpaid child maintenance for his estranged 16-year-old daughter.

Mr Boyle’s father Peter says he’s being kept in the dark about his son’s condition.

“It’s over a week ago now since I had contact with the Foreign Office and they’ve virtually told me nothing more than I already know,” he said from his home in Spalding, Lincolnshire.

Mr Boyle transferred the disputed £4,000 to the Foreign Office last Tuesday and was told the money had been received by the British Consulate in Brazil the next day.

However, since then, he’s had no indication as to if and when his son might be released.

“The lawyer dealing with Martin’s case put the money in, but now I hear there’s apparently another case against him,” added Mr Boyle. “I know nothing about it. I’m completely in the dark about this.”

The lecturer has been fighting for a number of years to gain access to his daughter after divorcing his Brazilian wife. He was arrested on arrival in the country due to an arrest warrant issued by his former mother-in-law.
