Fire crews cut a man from wreckage following a three-car smash which brought a key commuter route to a standstill during rush-hour.

Two engines were called to a stretch of the A28 near Chartham just before 5pm.

Emergency workers found one man trapped in a vehicle and hydraulic equipment was used to remove a door and free them.

He was then passed into the care of paramedics.

Further details are not known.

Traffic remained bad on the notorious stretch between Canterbury and Ashford for much of the evening.

Police spokesman Andy Saunders said: "We were called at 4.42pm following a collision involving three vehicles on the A28 in Chartham, near Canterbury. Officers and paramedics attended and one man was taken to a local hospital. The road was blocked and it reopened by 7pm."
