Firefighters called to Sturry Road, Canterbury

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have put out a blazing outbuilding on the A28 Sturry Road, Canterbury.

At the height of the fire in the early hours of this morning, neighbours were warned to keep their windows and doors closed.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said: “We were called to an outbuilding alight in Sturry Road, Canterbury, near Kingsmead roundabout.

“Upon arrival, crews discovered the building was fully alight. They put on breathing apparatus and set about tackling the blaze using a main hose jet.”

A public “warn and inform” message asking residents keep windows and doors closed was sent using social media.

The fire was extinguished by 2am but crews are still at the scene making the area safe.

The call came in just after midnight.

Firefighters had to work throughout the night using emergency lighting. Water to fight the blaze was taken from a nearby fire hydrant.

Police were also called.
