West Faversham Community Centre

The first stage of the multi-million pound West Faversham Community Centre has been handed over to the association.

The main hall, kitchen, bar area, offices and upstairs rooms have now been completed, making way for the second phase of work to begin.

This will include the demolition of the existing Bysing Wood Road centre to provide accommodation for pre-school children, a youth club and facilities for the disabled.

The centre is supported by the government scheme, Community Builders, which is backing 79 projects around the country. The West Faversham Community Association is one of only three out of 3,000 to get full funding, and was awarded a grant of £800,000 and a low interest loan of £200,000.

In addition, the Colyer-Fergusson Charitable Trust, donated more than £2 million.

Faversham town councillor Nigel Kay, who was responsible for launching the project, said: "This project has shown what can be achieved when everyone works together.

"Throughout the three and a half years I have been very encouraged by the huge degree of support and help that has been given by so many people."

Centre manager Simon Bannister said: "We are looking forward to welcoming people from Faversham and the surrounding villages to our spectacular new centre.

"We will offer many sporting, cultural and educational activities for all ages, as well as providing a first class venue for social and recreational events of all types."

An open day will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2012, from 10am to 3pm.

The venue is open for private hire and volunteers are still needed for a number of jobs. Ffor more information call Simon Bannister on 07980 742041.
