Villagers between Barham and Wickhambreaux have been put on flood alert and are being told to stock up with sandbags as water levels rise on the River Nailbourne.

Council and Environment Agency flood teams are on alert as waters have risen after heavy rain, with the river beginning to flow on its normal course.

Kent County Council, the Environment Agency, Southern Water and Canterbury City Council will be monitoring the river in the coming weeks, so that action can be taken if necessary.

There is also the possibility that rising groundwater could enter sewerage systems, causing wastewater to back up into properties, causing damage to toilet and bathrooms..

While flooding is thought to be unlikely, residents in Barham, Kingston, Bishopsbourne, Bridge, Patrixbourne, Bekesbourne, Littlebourne and Wickhambreaux have been told to be ready to take precautions with sandbags.
