A woman has been rushed to hospital after she was hit by a bus in Canterbury this morning.

The helicopter was scrambled to Rheims Way after the accident near St Peter's Place at 10.35am.

The woman, believed to be in her 60s, was struck by the Stagecoach bus as she tried to cross the road.

She has been taken to London's King's College Hospital with serious head injuries, but her condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

Witness Chris Stacey said: "The accident happened on the corner of where Rhiems Way meets St Peter's Place, heading towards the Westgate towers.

"From what I saw, the lady had stepped out into the road to cross over just as a bus came over the roundabout from Rheims Way.

"They were treating her laying down on the road about 2ft from the front of the bus. She was very bloodied.

"There was a police car, ambulance and helicopter all there.

"The helicopter landed and two men ran out to help treat the lady. She was then taken to hospital."

The air ambulance left the scene at midday and the road is now clear.

Stagecoach spokesman Divene Anderson said: "We can confirm that a pedestrian was taken to hospital today after stepping out in front of one of our buses while attempting to cross the road.

"The incident happened on St Peter's Place at around 10:30am.

"Our immediate thoughts are for the welfare of the injured woman and we can confirm that no one else was hurt in the incident.

"Safety is our absolute priority and we are currently assisting the police with their inquiries."
