A city centre shop window display has a particularly poignant scene - because it features a letter to Santa, written 120 years ago.

It was penned by five-year-old Marjorie in 1898, who asked for "little toy ducks and chickens and a canvas stocking".

It was found in a book donated to an Oxfam shop in Eastbourne in 1999 by the father of Lily Birchall, who works at Whirligig Toys in Sun Street in Canterbury.

She said: “When I was asked to design and create a Christmas window display, I knew exactly what I wanted to do - a traditional post office sorting room, incorporating this gorgeous letter.

"We have even made a post box inside the shop so children can post their own letters to Santa.”
