CANTERBURY'S Robert Howe will be painting the town red if he manages to clinch the Astratech Single-seater Championship in the final round of the series at Lydden on Saturday.

The Van Diemen Formula Ford driver has proved almost unbeatable this season at his home circuit.

Although there are double points available this time he only needs to finish the race to become champion.

But in the Intermediate Saloons Championship three drivers from the Ashford area all have a chance of the title.

At the moment Ashford engineer Bill Richards (Rover Mini) leads Egerton's Warren Johnson by just two points, but Peter Wilkinson (Sierra-Cosworth) from Bethersden is not far behind and any one could end up champion.

Elham's Nigel Craig (Ford RS2000) who won at Lydden last month could cloud the issue if he does so again.

Sports car enthusiasts can look forward to a double helping of championship rivalry in the Credit Professionals championship event and the South East Sports and Saloon Car Challenge race.

A Single-seater Challenge event, a round of the John Cooper Challenge and the John Taylor Handicap Champion-ship race are also on the programme for the meeting, which is organised by the South East Motor Sport Enthusiasts Club.

Lydden Circuit is on the A2, eight miles south of Canterbury.

The meeting starts with a Sprint event at 9am, then official practice at 12.45pm followed by the first of the seven races at 2.30pm.

Admission is £8 (£6 for senior citizens).

Parking, paddock and entry for accompanied children is free.
