AN armed robber who hit a postmaster on the head in Canterbury yesterday afternoon is still being hunted by police. The man, wearing a blue T-shirt and blue jeans, went into St Dunstan’s Post office in Whitstable Road at about 2.45pm.

He threatened the owner with a long-barrelled gun, then hit him on the head. No shots were fired.

The postmaster had a cut on the head, but was not badly hurt. The robber then tried to get into the office, but left empty-handed.

He fled in a stolen Subaru Impreza, starting a high-speed chase along the A290, during which he crashed into Brenley corner roundabout. Then he headed down the A2 before abandoning the car in Bigbury Woods at Chartham Hatch.

The man was dark-skinned with cropped hair, and in his twenties. Police need to hear from anyone who may have seen him or the dark green car in the Whitstable Road area. They believe there may have been another man in the car during the robbery. Anyone with information should ring 01227 762055.
