Kent cricketer Susie Rowe stands on the verge of her England debut after flying out to Sri Lanka - but insists the start of one sporting career will not be the end of another.

The 23-year-old is one of four uncapped players in a 15-strong England squad for the tour.

However, Rowe (pictured) always thought her international sporting break would come on a different type of field, in hockey, having represented England up to under-21 level.

Despite being set to pursue cricket instead, Rowe, who plays regularly for Canterbury in the England Hockey League, has vowed not to completely cut her ties with her second sport.

"The No.1 focus for me now is cricket and getting selected for future tours," said Rowe. "But hockey is still something I am playing and Canterbury are doing well.

"And when I come back, I will still go back and play for them. Hockey is beneficial for my cricket in terms of athleticism and fitness.

"Cricket helps my hand-eye co-ordination. You might see a few hockey shots out in Sri Lanka with the cricket bat."

The England women’s cricket team begin their tour of Sri Lanka on November 14 before heading to Australia in January as they attempt to retain the Ashes.
